Teleny is adapted from the anonymous London novel which was written in 1893. The story is that of a forbidden homoerotic love affair, based in Paris in the 1920's, between Frenchman Camille de Grieux and Hungarian pianist René Teleny performed at Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran, over May and June just past. I was fortunate enough to have been invited by director Robert Chuter to capture images at a media run through, which came with complimentary tickets to the play. This had provided my wife and I with a lovely evening out at the theater.
The show was quite confronting with plenty of male nudity and simulated sex scenes, but which I thought was well balanced with a great story and even some comedy. I was lucky enough to have my good friend and brilliant actor Dushan Philips , who plays the character of "Briancourt", introduce me to a few of the cast and crew members after the show. I had also worked with other members of the cast previously, providing them with head shots, and it was good to see my work on the bill. My wife and I rarely get to leave the town of Ballarat, nor the house for that matter, to be able to venture out for a non-work related social event, so to speak, so we had cleared our calender and had ourselves an excellent "Date night out" and thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
Getting back to the media run through, I had just previously upgraded my camera to the 5D Mark III, earlier that week and thought that this was the perfect opportunity to test it out on some extreme low light conditions, and it's performance was excellent and did not disappoint. I really enjoyed the photographers' session and felt that it was very well organised and ran smoothly, even with 24 other photographers with tripods and other things littered about on the set. My experience with theater photography on this project was definitely a lot of fun and is something that would like to do a lot more of in the future.
